Districts are being told to improve cybersecurity and to try AI tools with the staff they already have. The public survey record is more specific than that slogan.
Figures K-12 Dive reported
K-12 Dive reported on a survey led by the Center for Internet Security, which runs the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center. K-12 Dive wrote:
“Slightly over half of schools or districts said they grappled with a cybersecurity incident in the last year.”
K-12 Dive, on the Center for Internet Security report.
The same article says about a third reported an incident that affected school operations, and that 87% of school leaders reported phishing or email compromises among the top incidents. It also records a bright spot: 83% reported that they implement multi-factor authentication. On resources, K-12 Dive says the survey found 56% of cybersecurity programs underfunded, and 70% of leaders said they had delayed cybersecurity projects, technology investments, or staffing because of budget.
K-12 Dive reports that technology leaders laid out a five-point model and free or shared resources so small districts can make progress without large budgets. K-12 Dive reports that teachers who use AI say it frees time for students, while professional development has not kept up.
Opinion — Vlogic Advisors
Start from the gaps that survey already describes: phishing, multi-factor authentication, and a funded owner for the work you will not be able to hire. Do not hand teachers an AI tool without training and a written rule for what it may see. Shared resources are a reasonable path when headcount will not grow. Connectivity funding is the other half of this, in the E-rate piece.
